In the 150 Style Door, showing a small oval in the center, the Esmond glass undergoes a small change. Due to size constraints, the design no longer incorporates the flat seedy glass around the center. Instead, the clear bevels are surrounded by the small hammered and micro-granite glasses.

Year in Review

As we say farewell to 2024, we have plenty to celebrate and even more to look forward to.

We have been in our brand-new showroom since April, 2024! Stop by and visit us as our new and improved space allows us to have lots more on display, including a double door unit and an operating garage door!

To start off the year, our manufacturers are rolling out some changes.

Provia introduced a new glass last year, Aria, and it climbed into the Top Five most popular decorative glasses. We have it on display so come in and take a look! Provia is also introducing five new decorative glass styles: the beautiful Transcend, the Wrought Iron Crossbuck, and three different patterns of silk screen glass aptly named Trinity, Edge, and Breeze. Provia has also updated their internal mini-blinds, available in doors, windows, and patio doors. The silver and champagne colors will be slightly more matte and a little less shiny going forward.

Raynor has updated their wood tone process and rolled out two new colors for their Aspen Series. Cocoa Hickory and Honey Cedar are available in both plank and dual styles. With the addition of the Encore series, Raynor also offers wood tones in Greywood and Mocha along with a vibrant Red. If none of those appeal to you, you can still choose any color from the Sherwin Williams catalogue for all your design needs.

Ordering a garage door over the phone or online is tricky because every garage is a little different. A knowledgeable salesperson can check details like opening size and shape, headroom and side clearance, and even help you make design decisions. Have a representative come to your home and check out the situation before ordering a door. 

Determine a Garage Door Size
When it comes to buying a garage door, the first thing to consider is the size you need. For many homes, a single-car garage door is 8 to 9 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high. Double-car garage doors are typically 16 feet wide, with a height of 7 to 8 feet. If your garage is built to accommodate a taller vehicle, such as a heavy-duty truck or recreational vehicle, your garage door could be 10 feet tall or more. Maybe you need a custom size. Have a professional take the measurements to find the right garage door for you.

What is Your Budget
Knowing how to buy a garage door that fits your lifestyle — and wallet — is crucial. Before you start shopping, set a budget. For homeowners with a tight or limited budget, you may need to start with a standard, no-frills garage door and opener. Generally, the most affordable garage door types are steel, wood, and aluminum. If you have a more flexible budget, consider wood composite, fiberglass, or vinyl. 

Beware of Wood Doors
Real wood doors look fantastic when they're new. But you will have to devote time and money to maintenance. Natural wood finishes last a few years before they need recoating. The good news is you can get the look of wood for a fraction of the cost and avoid the maintenance nightmare. One option is embossed steel with a faux wood-grain finish. From a distance, these doors look remarkably like real wood. Or, consider a garage door with a wood composite overlay or a fiberglass skin. Composites offer the look of real wood but with better longevity and stability.

If you're planning to invest in an insulated door because you want to save energy or keep your garage warm, it's worth spending a little extra for insulation. 

Invest in Sturdy Springs
Springs are what help your garage door go up easily and come down slowly. Most garage doors use torsion springs. Standard torsion springs last for about 10,000 cycles. That may sound like a lot, but if you open and close your door an average of six times a day, you'll reach 10,000 cycles in less than five years. Upgrading to heavy duty springs can provide 20,000 cycles of opening and closing peace of mind.

Buy a New Opener
When you get your new garage door installed, also install a new garage door opener. Your opener will fail eventually, so if it's showing its age or you just want a quieter opener or one with more features, this is the time to replace it.

• If your garage is heated, upgrade to insulated glass.
• For extra privacy and security, install the glass in the top panel.
• Match the glass style to your house windows if possible.

Want a Quiet Door?
If you have an attached garage and want to minimize the racket caused by the garage door going up and down, choose a door with polyurethane insulation and nylon rollers. Garage door insulation dampens any vibrations that would normally be amplified by an uninsulated steel. And nylon rollers are simply quieter than metal ones. If you're also planning to replace the garage door opener, look for an opener with a belt drive. They're quieter than other types.

Think Twice About Installing Your Own Door
You could save a few hundred dollars by installing the door yourself, but it's one DIY project that doesn't have a big payoff. Here's why. For starters, there's a ton of parts and it'll take you at least a full day to put them together. Plus, winding the spring calls for special tools and lots of arm strength and is fairly dangerous. We recommend that you always hire a pro to install the door, the new door will be delivered and the old one hauled away, and the job will be done in about four hours. Plus, you'll have someone to a call if there's a problem.

Energy-efficient windows are specifically designed and constructed to conserve energy. They work by placing physical and chemical barriers between the air inside the home and the air outside to prevent heat transfer from one side to another. Energy efficient windows keep cooled air from leaking out of the home and hot air from leaking into the home in the summer, and the other way around in the winter.

Energy Savings
Energy-efficient windows help you save money by reducing the amount of energy you consume to cool and heat your house and, therefore, lowering your monthly energy bills.

Lower HVAC Costs

No Spring? No Problem!

Owning a garage door reminds me of what it’s like to own a car. It works just fine every day and then suddenly, it’s not working at all! There’s nothing as horrifying as a car that won’t start, except maybe a garage door that won’t open. Now, most of the time, when your door won’t open, it’s because the spring has broken. The spring system acts as the counterbalance for the garage door so when it breaks, the door is bearing its full weight against you or your opener. This normally results in not being able to open it.

However, when your spring breaks, Raynor has an option to make the repairs a little smoother for you. If you purchased an Aspen, Encore, or RockCreeke Series garage door, you’ll have had the option to upgrade to Raynor’s EnduraCote system. The upgrade initially appears cosmetic, with powder-coated white track, hardware, and end stiles and powder-coated black springs. But EnduraCote actually warrants all hardware and spring components against defects in material and worksmanship for as long as you (the original purchaser) own your home. The Enduracote springs even have a longer lifecycle than standard springs.

If you upgrade to EnduraCote, this means that the broken spring on your garage door will be replaced only at the cost of labor. A Raynor dealer (like us!) will take information from the broken spring, submit it to Raynor, and have the replacement spring back on your door as soon as possible because no one likes to have a garage door that doesn’t open.

So, keep that in mind while you’re shopping. Sometimes, the “extended” warranty is worth it!

(Graduation!) Hats Off to Morgan!

It’s not often that childhood dream blossoms into reality. However, this is exactly what happened to Morgan.

If you talk to Bob for any length of time, his daughter will (of course) come up in conversation. We cannot help talking about the people we love and are proud of. There’s no one who is as proud of Morgan as her parents. Watching her grow from his little girl playing with a toy doctor set to a clever student to a brilliant veterinarian has been the light of Bob’s life.

Morgan started her eight-year college career here at Cedar Crest, where she double-majored in Biology and Writing with a minor in Chemistry. Then, she applied for veterinary school at the University of Georgia in Athens for her final four years. She was able to get in on her first try! (Something that is practically unheard of as the veterinary field is very competitive.) Morgan truly excelled to have accomplished so much.

While she was learning, Morgan reached out to Dr Jeff Young and he offered to host her the very next day! (You might recognize Dr Jeff’s name from his show on Animal Planet, Rocky Mountain Vet!) Morgan found the Youngs to be very kind and genuine people. She became very close with Dr Petra. At the end of her stay, they even offered her a job! Unfortunately, it was too remote for Morgan. So exciting!

Morgan now practices in North Carolina, saving the lives of all our feathered, scaled, and furry friends. A.B.E. Doors and Windows, family-own and -operated, is delighted to witness Morgan’s growth and Bob’s pride. We’re so happy for her!

Best Tips to Get Super Clean Windows

Say goodbye to grime and streaks! Whether it is daily dust build up or a cute dog nose smudge — our windows are dirt magnets. But many times, even with our best intention, we end up with streaks on the glass when we attempt to clean our windows. Not to mention, leftover dirt and debris does not always wash off properly. 

Here are a few basic tips that will be a major help in achieving your window-washing goal: spotless, streak-free glass that maximizes your enjoyment of the views your windows provide. Here is how to wash your home’s windows the right way.

How often should you clean your windows?
Windows should be washed once or twice a year, depending on how much exposure they get to dirt and other soiling elements such as tree sap and bird droppings. Spring and fall are optimal times of year to clean windows, especially in colder climates. Choose a cloudy day or when the sun is not shining directly on the window. Sunshine exposure speeds up the drying of the washing solution, which can cause streaking or spotting. Because window solution dries quickly, even in the shade, work on just one window at a time. Don’t apply cleaner to multiple windows and then attempt to wash them all at once. This also applies to double-hung windows. Completely wash the top sash, and when that’s complete, wash the bottom.

What to use to wash windows
Many people purchase sprayable window washing solution to clean their windows. These products are easy to use and effective, but you can also make your own solution. The pros usually mix their own washing fluids because they are more economical and do not contain unnecessary chemicals. 

DIY Window Cleaning Solutions

• Distilled white vinegar and water: Cleaning windows with vinegar has been a tried-and-true trick for ages, and with good reason. The acidic composition of white vinegar works efficiently to break down the film that can accumulate on your windows. For a basic vinegar cleaning solution, we recommend mixing one-part distilled vinegar to 10 parts warm water in a spray bottle. Label the container and save leftovers for future use.
• Rubbing alcohol: If you have an especially stubborn area on your window, you can start your cleaning process by applying a solvent like rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth and rubbing it directly on the spot. You can also add rubbing alcohol to the vinegar and water for a slightly more powerful cleaning solution.
• Dish soap: Using a few drops of Dawn dish soap in your homemade window cleaner can help remove tough grime, which may be especially helpful when washing the exterior of your windows.
• Essential oils: While the scent of distilled vinegar or rubbing alcohol typically fades within moments of use, you may want to add a drop or two of your favorite essential oil to your homemade window cleaning solution. Adding lemon essential oil is a popular choice for creating a crisp and clean aroma.

If you decide to purchase a standard window cleaner instead of making your, avoid using those that are heavily based in ammonia or alcohol. It may seem like they’d produce a more intense clean, but they can leave window streaks and even a thin film that attracts dust and moisture.

Prep Your Windows 
To avoid spreading dust and dirt around after you polish your windows, first clean out your window tracks, dust your frames and wipe down the ledges. You can use a soft brush or vacuum to do so. Next, use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to wipe the dust from the glass panes. Remove any obvious marks or smudges by applying a small amount of nonabrasive cleaner with a microfiber cloth. For stubborn stains, you can also try a solvent like acetone or mineral spirits. Just rub the cloth on the areas of glass that need spot-cleaning. Be careful to avoid getting cleansers or solvents on the frames, as it may discolor the finish.

Wash Window Frames 
When it comes to cleaning frames, avoid power washing. Use warm, soapy water on a rag and avoid abrasive chemicals that may discolor the finish. Stubborn stains and deposits may be removed with mineral spirits or a cleaning solution like Pine-Sol® applied with a clean, dry cloth.

Clean Glass from Top to Bottom 
Use a lint-free microfiber cloth to clean your windows. Paper towels are likely to leave behind lint and fibers that can make your clean windows appear dirty. Spray your glass cleaner directly to the microfiber cloth, instead of spritzing the window itself. This can help prevent the cleaning solution from getting on your window frames. Work your microfiber cloth in a zig-zag motion down the window, starting at the top. Once you’ve completed the entire pane, grab a dry microfiber cloth to buff out any remaining solution residue. You’ll want to do this quickly after cleaning to prevent streaks.

Avoid Wiping With Paper
Paper towels and newspapers are commonly misused as products for scrubbing and drying the glass, but they just break down and leave lint behind. Use a microfiber cloth to do the job instead; it will grab dirt and dust and leave nothing behind.

Cleaning Double-Hung Windows 
If you have double-hung windows, tilting the sashes in makes it easy to clean exterior surfaces from the interior of your home. Clean the top sash first, starting with the exterior and followed by the interior, and then repeating the same process on the lower sash. If you’re washing larger, hard-to-reach outdoor windows, a squeegee may help expedite the cleaning process. Mix a slightly more diluted solution in a bucket, wash the windows with a sponge and use the squeegee to wipe the solution off from the top down. Wipe the edge of the squeegee clean after each swipe to help avoid dripping.

Vacuum Window Screens 
The best way to clean window screens is to vacuum off dust and dirt with an upholstery brush attachment. For grease spots, typically found on kitchen window screens, use a sponge, hot water and a mild detergent. Remember to be gentle as screens can bend easily.

Dust Blinds and Shades 
For standard blinds or shades that are fashioned over the glass, regular dusting will help them maintain a like-new appearance. For wood blinds, dust with a dry cloth or vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment. If you have plastic or metal blinds, you can immerse them in a tub of lukewarm water and mild detergent. Then, rinse with clear water and let air dry before reinstalling. For fabric blinds or shades, use a vacuum cleaner with a drapery brush attachment to remove dust and a damp cloth to remove any smudges or fingerprints.

Invest in a Squeegee
The best way to obtain a streak-free shine is to make sure all the water and soap are removed from the window. Run over the glass from top to bottom with a rubber-bladed squeegee to scrape away excess water.

Shannon Runs Again!

There’s no one like Shannon. She reminds me of the Tasmanian Devil—a fast-talking whirlwind that rips in and out of your life, dragging you along until you’ve signed up for something you didn’t expect. She brings this energy not only to our office here at A.B.E. Doors and Windows, but everything she touches. Shannon’s Girl Scout Troop sells more cookies than I can fathom, goes on trips to New York City and beyond, and accomplishes more in one weekly meeting than I can in a month. If you look up adventurous in the dictionary, you’ll see Shannon’s smiling face. Nothing can stop her.

Not even cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Unfortunately, last year, Shannon got that phone call—‘You have cancer.’ For some people, this would be the moment life absolutely stops in its tracks. For Shannon, it was her moment to rise above, proceed, and ultimately overcome.

There are a thousand things that Shannon does for enjoyment: crochet, read, hike, bike, travel, adventure. (Trust me, there’s not an empty day on her calendar, I’ve seen it.) However, there is one thing that Shannon enjoys weekly: running. Whether it’s with her Making Strides group or her Super Sloths, Shannon goes out to run every Tuesday and Saturday. Rain or shine, sleet or snow, she goes and she runs. In October 2023, Shannon ran a 10K and finished in under an hour. This year, same month, same race, post-double mastectomy, she finished in one hour and thirteen minutes. Nothing can stop Shannon’s enthusiasm for putting one sneaker in front of the other.

After everything she’s conquered this year, Shannon was nominated to be the keynote speaker at the 32^nd Annual Women’s 5K Classic, with special focus on promoting fitness, cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment for women. While there were plenty of stand out moments in her speech, I’ll just highlight my personal favorite. Shannon says, “Hiking and running are much like life: the journey demands that you put one foot in front of the other, time and time again. If you stay present during the trek, you’ll find beauty in every step, not just at the summit.”

Nothing can hold Shannon back, especially not cancer.

October is a month dedicated to something you might not think about every day — window covering safety. National Window Covering Safety Month serves as a reminder of the importance of making your homes safe for your little ones and furry friends. 

When we think of the many ways to ensure our homes are as safe as possible for our children, window falls are usually a concern. But parents still often overlook a potentially serious item, window covering cords.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes. Corded window coverings can be a strangulation hazard when infants, young children and even pets can accidentally become entangled in the cords. A serious accident can only take seconds. The CPSC, the window covering industry and consumer safety advocates all agree that only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords should be used in homes with young children.

How do you know what is the right choice?

Replace window blinds, corded shades and draperies with products that are cordless or have inaccessible cords, such as those marked with the “Best for Kids” label certification, available at major retailers in the U.S. The Best for Kids™ certification program makes it easy for parents and caregivers to make the right choice to help them identify the window covering products that are best suited for homes with young children. 

Additional safety tips:

• While you are waiting for your cordless options to arrive and be installed, move all cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and window covering cords, preferably to another wall.
• Also, ensure that all window covering cords are out of sight and reach, by shortening or tying them up and away, so that they are inaccessible to young children.

Happy 50^th to A.B.E. Doors and Windows!

If you’ve driven down Hamilton Blvd recently, you might have noticed some construction where our original showroom used to be. A.B.E. Doors and Windows now sits center stage in a brand-new shopping center. While our upgrade has been in the works for a while, it’s always nice to see the fruits of one’s labor blossom. I can only imagine how it feels for Jim, who started this company in his parents’ garage in June of 1974.

The installation side of the business has been growing steadily, including the purchase of a large warehouse in 2000. However, the showroom had been kept in Jim’s cozy converted home from 1980 until October, 2022. While the new showroom was under construction, we stayed in a very small temporary location for over a year, cramming in all our beautiful doors and windows (and ourselves). Now we’ve more than tripled our showroom space!

We have three installed door units, eighteen single doors, several storm doors, two patio doors, a whole room of windows including a bay and bow window, every piece of decorative glass in Provia’s catalogue, and a variety of Raynor garage doors on display. As the vibrant colors of fall sweep in, it’s the perfect time to prepare your home for the cooler months ahead. Fall maintenance isn’t just about keeping your house looking great; it’s about safeguarding it from the harsher weather to come and ensuring everything runs smoothly during the colder season.

Here’s a handy checklist to help you through the essential fall maintenance around the house:

1. Check and Clean Gutters and Downspouts

With falling leaves and autumn rain, gutters can quickly become clogged, leading to water damage. Blocked gutters can cause water to overflow, damaging your roof, siding, and even your foundation.

• Tip: Clean out your gutters regularly and check for leaks or misalignment. Ensure water is being directed away from the house to prevent erosion and basement flooding.

2. Inspect the Roof

The roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements. After the summer heat and before the winter snow, fall is an ideal time to inspect for any damage.

• Tip: Look for loose, damaged, or missing shingles, and check for signs of wear around vents, chimneys, and skylights. Repair any issues now to prevent leaks or ice dams in the winter.

3. Seal Windows and Doors – One of A.B.E. Doors & Windows favorite home maintenance tip.

Drafts can significantly increase your heating costs in winter. Ensure that windows and doors are properly sealed to keep the cold air out and warm air in.

• Tip: Check weather stripping and caulking around windows and doors. 

4. Service Your Heating System

As temperatures drop, your heating system will be working overtime. Regular maintenance can improve efficiency and prevent costly repairs.

• Tip: Have a professional inspect and service your furnace, heat pump, or boiler. Replace air filters, check for proper airflow, and test your thermostat to ensure everything is functioning efficiently.

5. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

With the increased use of heating systems in fall and winter, it’s essential to make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order.

• Tip: Replace batteries and test each device. Ensure you have detectors installed on every floor, especially near bedrooms and common areas.

6. Drain and Winterize Outdoor Faucets and Sprinkler Systems

Frozen water in outdoor pipes can cause them to burst, leading to costly repairs. It’s important to drain and shut off outdoor water systems before the first freeze.

• Tip: Disconnect hoses from outdoor faucets, drain them, and store them away. If you have a sprinkler system, hire a professional to blow out any remaining water.
